Feeling Better & Smiling Again

After my last post I felt like I should say I am feeling much better. The cold is over and I'm back in my studio. I'm working on a new painting for the National Latino!Cancer!Summit in July in San Francisco. There will be an art exhibit and auction during the summit. I will be submitting a painting reflecting the theme of educating Latinos to the dangers of too much sun exposure. I like my idea . The painting is coming together and I am so enjoying painting!

p.s.I am still adjusting and making a new way for myself!

By the way, the kitty above belongs to my friend Danna. I took the photo about 3 years ago and managed to catch the kitty right when she(?) was yawning. I loved that the photo looked like a big old cat smile!

Took a whirlwind trip to L.A. over the MLK weekend. Visited family (and particularly the Fusco side of the family) and had a great time. We drove down in a rented 12 seat van. We collected my mother in San Jose, and from San Francisco came my husband, daughter, son and his wife with my grand kids Leo and Isabelle. All of our luggage plus baby stuff for Isabelle (she's only 6 months) was packed into the van. It was hysterical. We stayed with my sister in L.A. and brother-in-law J.D. I'd compare the experience to an urban camping trip. It was a memorable event with lots of fun thrown in.

Since my return, I developed a horrific cold. In my post hospitalization state, I am still considered immunosuppressed, So, colds can lead to pneumonia, etc. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!. I just have to be careful, rest and not push myself until the symptoms clear.

Part of my post hospitalization treatment for Leukemia involves taking multiple meds: Chemo, anti-viral and others.There are a total of six different types I take at various times of the week. One type, Methotrexate, is taken one day a week for a total of 16 pills. Fortunately the pills are small! Another drug, a Sulpha drug, I take twice a day on the weekend. The other four pills I take every day. WOW...THAT'S A LOT OF PILLS!!! I've experienced minimal side effects but primarily experience fatigue.

So, I haven't been into the studio for 11 days. The temperature in the building these days is closer to a refrigerator. No heat of course other than our space heaters. Its slightly (only slightly) funny when you see fellow artists walking around in full layered attire: multiple shirts, sweaters, jackets, leggings under jeans, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves. Yes, that's working in the winter months.

Let me just say I miss my studio time terribly. Since my discharge from the hospital, all I've wanted to do is paint. My jewelry making, gift making is still happening but its my painting that I long for. With eleven days out of the studio, I started to have my "failure dreams." I dream I'm either in high school, college or performing on stage. I either haven't done my homework, studied for my finals or rehearsed my lines or dance. I'm a complete failure!! Anxiety. My anxiety of not being in the studio is showing up in my dreams!

So, I'm adjusting. This is all new territory. How do I fit my health issues into my life? How do I adjust to living with blood cancer, Leukemia, now in remission? The answer is I don't know. I'm figuring it out as I go along. The one thing I'm clear on is in order to maintain my health, I have to take care of myself. That involves trying to stay healthy, eat well, try to exercise and learn to let go of those stressful situations that always took their toll. They are totally not worth my time or energy!

Webster defines the word adjust as: to adapt or conform oneself (as to new conditions). Yes, indeed. That is my life.

I am still creating, I am still promoting. My work is available for shows and readily available for sale all! I am simply adjusting to my new, renewed life.

GRATITUDE - new mixed media work for January 2012

I've been working for the past three weeks on a new mixed media work I called GRATITUDE. It is a series of designs I interpreted from Indian graphics. I found the swirls and floral designs just lovely and wanted to include them on the canvas. The color choices were influenced by Indian street graphics. The one eye represents vision, sight. I wanted to represent how my view on life and living has become more vibrant with my Leukemia now in remission.. It feels that I've been given a new sense of color. The "praying hands" represent a sign of thanks as well as the acknowledge that divine forces followed me throughout my illness and carry me through my wellness.

Since my return to health, I have been full of Gratitude.

I always find in the New Year we can always be full of expectations of what we want, what should be. When it doesn't happen or the goals are difficult to reach we become disappointed, depressed.

I thought this article was important in that it gave guidelines of how to better deal with these expectations / depression.

Two years ago, reading this quote, I would smirk and think, “What a cliché.”

In the last two years, I would read this quote and be in utter disbelief that anything can be learned when one is in the depths of hell.

Today, I read this quote and resonate confidently, that yes, even though I tried to end my life, even though I had to quit a high paying job, even though I still suffer from major depression, good has come out of my negative experience, and I have learned the lesson to take care of myself and listen to my body, albeit the hard way.

Around November 2009, my doctor said to me, “Noch, I think you are burned out. Your migraines are most probably due to stress. Please go see a psychologist.”

My fiancé dragged a reluctant me into the shrink’s office, and I came out, diagnosed with major depression. I had no idea what it meant or what would become of me. I just felt extremely unmotivated, had no appetite, only had negative thoughts in my little head, and was excruciatingly tired of life.

I was immensely frustrated with myself. I didn’t know why I was depressed, or burned out. I thought I had it all: the executive job, high on the corporate ladder at the young age of 28.

I spoke a few languages, lived all around the world, had a man who loved me for who I was, had my few soul mates and a wide network of friends. So what happened to me?

Indeed, I felt really ungrateful to be sick at all. All the people who passed me everyday in the misty smog of Beijing seemed to live much harder lives, scraping by the wayside. So, who was I to be unhappy about my life? I had no answer. And the more I thought about it, the more I got caught in my web of negative thoughts and unreasonable reasoning of life.

I closed myself off from the rest of the world, and disappeared off the social radar. I was forced to take medical leave from work, being physically unable to do any work or concentrate.

The few close friends who knew of my plight tried to console me.

“It’s a challenge and test, to make you stronger,” they’d say. They gave me examples of all these great leaders of the world who had to go through trials and tribulations to get to where they were. There was something in store for me, and it would end up a positive life changing experience, they reassured me.

But I could not agree with anything they said. I could not see beyond that dark tunnel of despair. I found no meaning in life.

I tried to end my own life a few times. Each time my fiancé stopped me or saved me in time.

This lasted for some nine months. I stopped caring how I looked or dressed. I spent each day in bed or on the beanbag in the living room. I was too aloof to even watch TV or read a book.

I was amused by the irony that when I was so busy with work, all I wanted was time to lie around to watch TV or read; yet when I did have the time, I had no energy or interest.

Somehow, a little spark went off in my head one day, and I decided to write my own blog. Perhaps it was after reading too many articles in the blogosphere on depression, or how to live a better life that I got such inspiration. So, I started writing and rambling.

I fleshed out my negative thoughts, amidst pain and crying as I recounted the days and livid emotions in those none months of my worst days of major depression. I searched within my soul.

I asked myself again those fundamental questions on what I wanted in life, what would make me happy, and what my passions were.

Through my self-reflection and writing, I finally learned, painstakingly, in no particular order:

1. Don’t ignore warning signals in your body. Frequent petty colds, stomach aches, and headaches may all be a sign of stress.

2. There is no need to be strong all the time, and even less of a need to maintain an image of strength in front of others.

3. Achievements and titles mean nothing if they’re not something you’re passionate about.

4. Creativity is therapeutic, and it’s in everyone, just sometimes suppressed.

5. We need to matter the most to ourselves—over any job promotion, meeting, excel spreadsheet.

6. Not replying to emails immediately is not the end of the world.

7. We all need spare time for ourselves—time for solitude and reflection.

8. It doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks, if we know in our hearts something isn’t right.

9. Most petty worries aren’t serious. So save some energy.

10. Everything will be okay in time.

11. Health is the most important thing in the world.

12. Sometimes it’s best to stop doing so many things, and instead spend more time enjoying what we have.

13. There is no point in being afraid of the uncertainty because it doesn’t change that the future is uncertain. Leap.

14. We don’t have to worry about being a disappointment to anyone, because we do not need to live according to anyone else’s expectations of us.

15. We will all hurt. Embrace the pain, and know that suffering is a choice.

Depression was a loud wake up call for me. It taught me to stop sprinting towards the vanity of titles, money, and achievements with a muddled vision. It was a signal that something was wrong in my life and change was needed. It took getting close to death for me to fully appreciate the value of every breath.

I do not purport to have learned everything there is to learn about adversity. Yet, my mind has opened to welcoming experiences that might seem negative, now and in years to come.

Whatever befalls, positive or negative, embrace it with open arms, experience it, and learn from it.

Today I am still recovering from depression, but I’m learning to free myself from the traps of negative thinking, and establishing new habits for a new life.

So I say thank you sickness. Thank you depression. Thank you adversity.

We’ve all had our fair shares of struggles, and we’ll all have more—which means we’ll have new opportunities to learn, grow, and share it.

I'm HEALTHY and a new life unfolds...

HAPPY EVE OF A NEW YEAR!!

Just wanted to send a New Year greeting and a thank-you for all your support, prayers and good wishes. I am healthy and in remission for almost a year now. UNBELIEVABLE! I found the strength through all of you to endure the discomfort of my chemo, various tests which poke and prod, an over flow of oral meds plus the pulling around of that IRRITATING IV pole.

I've been really, really busy since my discharge from the hospital just before Labor Day. I was immediately back in my studio and managed to paint 4 large paintings by September Fall Open Studios. I had missed painting so much. October meant Dia de los Muertos activities and that was a whirlwind of activity through early November. I then left for New Orleans with Gary on November 5th for a 10 day visit. It was wonderful. When I returned, there was one holiday market (I cut back this year on the number) and some online sales. Before Christmas arrived, I decided to take some time off from the studio, spend time with Gaby and decorate the house, tree and wrap presents. It was the first time I took time off for the holidays in years and it felt good. It felt great to share time with Gaby, my girl and enjoy the holidays with her and Gary.

Where that left me was some time to reflect on my illness and allowed me to look back at this year. How did I feel: frightened! I survived this Leukemia diagnosis with strength I didn't realize I had. I saw people dying on the Oncology Floor. I saw people who were not resilient, who were wasting away with cancer. It was frightening. I looked, felt sad but kept on going. Today, I deal with the fear every day. Thoughts come in like: how long do I have, when, will it return, how will my kids do without me? I think having these thoughts are pretty natural. How I deal with them is that I've created an imaginary pair of windshield wipers. When these thoughts arrive, I pretend to bring out the windshield wipers, clean out my brain, and wash the thoughts away. Like a dirty window you can't see through, my brain needs a good cleaning so I can think clearly. I have to remind myself I have no control over my future but I can make my present as enjoyable as possible.

So, speaking of the present, one of the most amazing things I've observed, being back and living in the present, is that experiencing a healing, rebirth, renewal, etc.does not mean that all your relationships will also be evolved. I have found myself struggling with the desire to change these relationships. I want these individuals to suddenly become introspective, more sensitive, more empathetic. Right. It will never happen. My only solution is to let go of my desire to change them.

In my search for ways to alter my expectations, I came across a post from Tiny Buddha which I subscribe to. The title is, "40 Ways to Let Go and Feel Less Pain." Too good to be true? Maybe. Personally, I found this helpful. The article starts with: " Eckhart Tolle believes we create and maintain problems because they give us a sense of identity." I can relate to this. There is also a quote from Ajahn Chah’s which I find very helpful:

"If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace."

This is my latest challenge. I wanted to share the link with you just to show you that I hope to always be able to look at my life and living as something precious, that always needs work, needs revision, needs change. When my life nears its end, I hope I can then say I gave it my best shot. I looked within, adapted, revised to make my world and others more at peace and therefore made my present more peaceful.

Walkers in the procession will meet at the corner of 22nd and Bryant which is the starting point of the procession.If you'd like you can bring a photo of a loved one who has passed on and a candle to light to symbolize a lighting of their path while interacting with the living.

There will also be free art supplies on hand to make custom frames, or nichos, and free supplies for making papel picado and crepe paper flowers to add on to the "bones" of a large altar we have created in Studio 24. I will be one of the vendors at the Dia de los Muertos opening celebration at SOMArts. The theme is "Illuminations." It was chosen by curators René and Rio Yañez to symbolize a source of light for spiritual and intellectual reflection. This year’s exhibition is dedicated to community pillar and Mission District business owner Martha Sanchez and renowned artist Pablo Picasso.

I'm out of the hospital. Feeling healthy and painting again.I'm taking things slow but working steadily towards showing my work again. I'm so happy.

My first big event is Open Studios at my building, 1890 Bryant St. I'm thrilled to be showing along with my fellow 50 artists in the building.

What is your art/design profession? I call myself an urban folk artist.

What was your career path leading up to your current profession/title? Worked in the field of Public Health for many years, then went through a major career change as a sales representative of contemporary jewelry. Became a full time Mom and began doing art projects in the schools relating to Day of the Dead and other Latino / Mexican related subjects.

What do you enjoy most about your profession? I enjoy the flexibility, the freedom to create and the comraderie among artists.

Tell us about “The Moment” when you knew you had to be an artist/ designer/your current profession. What was the experience like for you? It was a rather heart breaking experience. I lost a friend to a violent death. She was a great inspiration for me in that she overcame many hardships in her life to become a successful owner of a hair salon. When I lost her, I felt her “gift” to me was to not fear taking chances. I felt that she showed me life was too short. If you want to be an artist, work hard and fearlessly.

Did you study art/design in school? If so, tell us about your degrees and certifications and what you liked most about school. Absolutely not! I have a B.A. in Social Welfare from U.C. Berkeley. Berkeley was a huge school with a diverse student population and expansive education alternatives.

What/who are your artistic inspirations? I love contemporary Chicano / Latino artists like Patssi Valdez, Ester Hernandez and Rio Yanez. I am also in awe of the work of Frida Kahlo as well as the Mexican Muralists of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

What project are you most proud of? I suppose I’m most proud of the work I did in my children’s schools on Day of the Dead. The kids, all of them, were hungry for information. They were so receptive to the altar building, the books I read to them on Day of the Dead and making sugar skulls of course.

How/where do you sell your art? (i.e. Etsy, agent, gallery, etc.) If you do not currently sell your art, where would you try selling first? I currently sell on Etsy, Latin Pop Shop and Nest. I also sell my work at open studios organized through my building at 1890 Bryant in San Francisco. In addition, I do a few arts and crafts fairs particularly around Dia de los Muertos and the December holidays.

What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting your art career? There are no mistakes to be made when creating. You are a work in progress. If you must doubt, go for it then get over it and keep on working hard. Strive to always improve and always be open to learning.

I'm back at the studio and it FEELS GREAT! I can paint again. I worked on these two items this week and so look forward to making more.

I pulled out a large canvas and sketched a few things. A little nervous about putting brush to canvas but will just go with it. There will be no mistakes in creating - I have to tell myself.

Visited with many friends at the studio. Went to an art opening of my studio mate, Paul Morin's work. His worked looked FABULOUS!

Its been a tiring week but I have to build up my stamina again.

Have a bone marrow biopsy scheduled for this coming Monday - not my favorite test - but have to endure. Reminders of my Leukemia are never more than a few steps away but nevertheless my life feels very fulfilling!

I've had just two days of living this quote. I have to say, it has given me permission to let go of future worries and left me with a feeling of calm. Yesterday, I was on my way to the studio when my friend Maryellen called. She is a nurse at San Francisco General. She had a day off. She wanted to know if I wanted to go with her to Terra Mia to paint a ceramic dish or cup. Hanging out with a good friend sounded like fun. I decided to leave my studio time until today and hang out with her. It was lots of fun. As always, lots and lots of good conversation and lots and lots of laughing.

I had just told my studio mate Paul and another artist friend Catherine, that I wanted to take some of the stress out of doing my artwork. I wanted to work at it because I enjoy creating rather than I have to create it for a deadline. The latter is very, very stressful. I also said that if I had a friend who called me during the week wanting to hang out, I was going to take the time to enjoy time with them. Well, it had been less than 24 hours that I said this and I heard from Maryellen. I had to believe that this was some kind of sign or message! I decided I wanted to put my words into play. So Terra Mia with Maryellen it was! It was a great day.

Life can be pretty amazing!

where y'at? what it is.

where y'at? what it is.

Where y'at is a slang greeting in New Orleans. When you meet someone in the street this is what they ask. Then you reply with the key phrase what it is. If you respond wrong, the initiator will know you are not local. Where y'at is also a New Orleans way of asking how things have been going for a person in general.

Well lets just say "y'all" just asked me where y'at? Here's my response...

I've been poked, prodded, poisoned, cleared of poisons, rolled into metal cylinders for an MRI, confined to bed for hours for a CAT-SCAN, given multiple units of blood, had bone marrow removed more times than I'd like to remember, ditto spinal fluid. I was also the first patient to contract the Norovirus in the hospital.. Being that most patients on the oncology floor are immunosuppressed, I was isolated from the rest of the patients, surrounded by doctors and nurses in yellow gowns and felt like the big cootie monster. I could handle almost anything that was expected of me but isolate me from people, keep me from socializing and the light fades and the world is eternally grey. The internet and cell phone helped but there's nothing like face to face chats with neighbors.

My ALL diagnosis (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) was made on 11/30/10. I began chemo therapy immediately at UCSF. I finished my therapy schedule on 7/30/11. I got through it. I stayed strong. A new chapter has opened up in my life. With that comes a multitude of questions about my future, my life span. How much time I have.

These are frightening questions to ask. When I do my internet searches, the results are terrifying. Today when I had to grab some information for this blog post, I ended up on the Web M.D site. Here's some of the terrifying information they offer:

"adult patients with ALL are at risk of developing central nervous system (CNS) involvement during the course of their disease"

"Appropriate initial treatment...results in a complete remission rate of up to 80%. Median remission duration for the complete responders is approximately 15 months."

"Patients who experience a relapse after remission can be expected to succumb within 1 year, even if a second complete remission is achieved."

Okay enough of that horrible, ugly stuff. The information above was compiled by the National Cancer Institute and was last updated August 2010. There are other treatment alternatives should the ALL return like bone marrow transplants but honestly I don't want to deal with writing about that unless I have to.

So, where do I stand now?

I don't know.

I so want to have the view that my glass is half full rather than half empty. I have been out of the hospital for a week. I feel like I've been trying to stay afloat. I don't want to be driven by negative thoughts. I want to clear the negatives out and focus on what I have in my life now: my husband, my children, my grandchildren, my fabulous friends, my artwork.

Where to start or where to leave off is a mystery. I have work to do. I need to seek out those like me. Survivors.

But first of all, I have to break my fear. Mortal life isn't eternal.I have to return to the idea that each day is as precious as a lifetime. I'm struggling. Yes I'm fearful but I'm determined to keep working to better live with this fear. I'm sad but I still allow myself to laugh. I'm angry - yes, I occasionally say 'WHY ME?" but answer back it just is and we can't control all things in our lives.Finally, I've had days where I can't control any of the feelings and I try and loose myself in artwork or just feel bad. I don't believe in suppressing feelings.Let them out then move on. Feeling is living.

So that's where I'mat.

Back again from hospital and one more to go!

Just returned from my second to the last hospitalization and chemo treatment. It gets harder to go back as I near the end of my treatment. I really don't want to be there.

Its an interesting time in my 9 months of leukemia diagnosis and treatment. What I feel the most is fear. I'm afraid of the future. The latest stats I learned are interesting and alarming. The chemo regimen I received for the past 9 months is 95% effective in keeping the disease in remission. The second statistic is not so encouraging. The return rate of leukemia, the ability for the disease to return is 50%. Which way to go: the glass is half empty or the glass is half full? Right now I can't seem to see beyond the glass is half empty. I never thought at this time in my life I would be dealing with my life longevity. How long do I have on this earth?

I am expressing this fear now because I believe I am going through a series of phases in my recovery that I must accept. I've had very little feelings of relief that my treatment and hospitalizations are soon to be over. There is some. The overwhelming emotion is fear.

I've spoken to a few nurse practitioners and doctors at the hospital about my feelings. One wonderful practitioner told me that I needed to get out in the world and seek out some leukemia survivors. Meet with them. Learn from them. What have they gone through? How have they dealt with their fears? This was the best, most practical advice I could have gotten. What a smart girl she is! Stephanie, I think is her name. She also said to keep in mind that all my months, in and out of the hospital, were spent with sick patients. This has been a very one-sided view of people with cancer. Some patients are sick but others are very, very, sick. I have known of (roomed with one) two patients who died in the past 2 months. This has been very, very frightening.

So, I am giving myself an assignment. When my next, last and final chemo and hospitalization takes place - happening in two weeks - I will seek out some survivors. There is a group I read about of cancer survivors that meets once a month in San Francisco. There is also a Leukemia Yoga group that meets once a week. It sounds like the people attending are not the types who have the latest Yoga attire and fabulously toned body so this suits me just fine! If this works out great if not, I will try to find other resources to help me.out.

Was interviewed last week by a reporter from the SF Chronicle. I was sitting in a cafe in Glen Park with fellow artist Catherine Mackey, when the reporter walked up and wanted to know whether our appointed San Francisco mayor should run for office. ME...with opinions???

Imagine that every time you leave your house, you see a big cartoon of your own face smiling back at you from your neighbors' front windows.
So it goes for appointed Mayor Ed Lee, who is the focus of efforts by at least three groups trying to persuade him to change his mind and run for a full four-year term as mayor.
But are these really grassroots movements urging Lee to add his name to the November ballot or simply AstroTurf campaigns being rolled out by seasoned political operatives to appear as if there is a public groundswell?
Until campaign finance reports are made public Aug. 1, the answer is unclear, although it appears there are elements of both.
It's easy to spot the "Run, Ed, Run" signs in the windows on steep, leafy Hamerton Avenue in Glen Park, though one house boasts a "Bevan Dufty for Mayor" sign.
Carole Brown, who has lived across the street from the Lees for 15 years, said there was no campaign push to display the sign in her window. She requested one online because she thinks her neighbor should run to keep his job after being appointed in January to serve the final year of newly elected Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's term as mayor.
"We're all hoping so. He gets things done," Brown said, explaining that she likes Lee in the neighborhood and in Room 200 for the same reasons, "His general rapport, his honesty. He's very effective."

Storefront signs

More than a dozen "Run, Ed, Run" signs dot storefronts and office buildings along busy Stockton Street in Chinatown, but none of the half dozen managers or business owners interviewed said they asked for them. Instead, a group of teenagers came by two weeks ago, asking to put up the signs.
Mendy Jiang, manager of Hop Hing Ginseng Co., a traditional Chinese herb shop, said she was glad to accommodate.
"Many Chinese support him," Jiang said. "He's doing good."
But an assistant manager at a nearby hair salon, who had a picture of herself with Newsom, didn't know who Lee was, despite the sign in the window.
A silver-haired shop owner at Wonkow Food Products, a neighborhood store with a "Run, Ed, Run" sign just a few feet from a "Wilma Pang for Mayor" one, shrugged when asked if she wanted Lee to run.
The first group urging him to jump into the race, the Draft Mayor Ed Lee Organizing Committee, was started by former Supervisors Michael Yaki and Jim Gonzalez, both political consultants who could benefit financially from working on a Lee for Mayor campaign.
Enrique Pearce, a political consultant being paid through funds raised by a second group of Lee backers to organize the "Run, Ed, Run" campaign, said their effort was a true groundswell of public support.
That group, calling itself Progress for All, has the active backing of Lee confidante and Chinatown power broker Rose Pak, an ally of former Mayor Willie Brown, who has also called for Lee to run. Its co-chairs include Planning Commission President Christina Olague and outgoing Chinatown Community Development Center head Gordon Chin, whose nonprofit group got $1.1 million in contracts with the mayor's office during the fiscal year that ended June 30.
Progress for All, despite being registered as a general campaign committee not affiliated or opposed to specific candidates, this week started going after four announced candidates, buying advertising on Google tied to searches of their names. One is Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, a Lee ally. The ads say, for example, "David Chiu needs competition - Sign our petition to Mayor Ed Lee."
The group has so far gathered at least 20,000 signatures using volunteers and the online petition, Pearce said.
"The proof is in the pudding," he said. "You don't get 20,000 San Franciscans urging Ed Lee to run in November without a solid grassroots movement."
Still, in interviews with dozens of people in neighborhoods around the city, at least half had no idea who Lee was, let alone whether he should run, Ed, run.

Against the draft

But Pamela Clark, who was waiting for the 14-Mission bus in front of the "Run, Ed, Run" campaign headquarters, disapproves of the effort.
"If he doesn't want the job, they shouldn't try to draft him," Clark said.
That hasn't stopped Michael Breyer, a library commissioner and co-founder of the company Courtroom Connect, from creating a Draft Ed Lee Facebook page, boasting over 1,500 fans.
With handmade signs of office paper glued together, Breyer and a couple dozen others hoisted beers Thursday at 1300 on Fillmore as part of "Drink a Draft Beer to Draft Ed Lee."
Mohammad Ibrahim is not so energized. He has a sign backing Supervisor John Avalos for mayor in his Mission District smoke shop, and thought he also had a Lee sign, until it was pointed out that the sign was for state Sen. Leland Yee, another candidate. Ibrahim said he lets any candidate post a sign.
Really, he's not excited about any of them.
"You can't ask too much these days," he shrugged.

Chicano Pop-Art - A few new non-jewelry items

~picked up a paint brush for the first time in 8 months & it made me so happy~

After spending months in the hospital, I finally found the time in between hospital visits to pick up a brush. What a relief! Finding my hands a bit wobbly, I was still able to put together two gift items that I felt okay about. If I had felt focused enough during my 8 months of hospitalizations and treatments to paint, I would of. Unable of course to paint in my hospital room, I couldn't seem to find the motivation to paint in between my visits. As my treatment and hospital visits come to an end (2 MORE LEFT!!), I see an end in sight and a new beginning. I can see my studio time coming back to me. One thing I'm absolutely sure about is that I am too restricted when I paint at home. I am too worried about staining the sink with my paints, dropping paint on the hardwood floor or getting paint on the cabinets. I paint in the kitchen and hate the thought of mixing paint with our food or utencils. Am I being too anal? Probably. Possibly. I just have an alternaitve space to work out of and it is coming back to me. Two more visits and Studio 318 is mine again!

I'm a granny again!!! My son Mario and daughter-in-law Adela had a girl: Isabelle Lucia Fusco this morning at 7:47. She is 19 inches long and weighs 6.5 pounds. Grandparents Martha & Gary are so happy to have another grandchild to add to the famila. Our very special big boy grandson Leo, at age 6 now has a little sister!

Well here I am writing in my blog when I should be taking pictures of my new work and posting them on Etsy and Facebook.I've got some great new jewelry I created during my last hospital visit. Gosh I wish I had someone that could do the rest of the steps for me and I could just continue creating. Anyone out ever feel this way? After writing that I realize I've been away from the studio for too long. Part of doing your art is completing all the grunt work to get it out in the world. Anyway, since I'm now at home, I could also be washing dishes, making the bed and on and on. The truth is I don't feel like any of it. I am doing the big P: I'M PROCRASTINATING! I'm also looking out the windows of my house at the blue skies and admiring the birds flying by and the sound of the wind. Oh boy, I've got it bad.

My last hospital visit was just 6 days which was the shortest I've had in my 7 months of treatment so far. It wasn't necessarily easy but it was fast. The longer I stay, the better I get to know the nurses on the Oncology floor of UCSF. What an incredible group they are. We are talking hard working women and men too. They have to do lots of hands on, sometimes icky work. Working with people who are ill has its merits but also can be quite difficult. I am in total of awe of many of them. Each time they work with me, doing whatever task is necessary at the time, I find myself thanking them. I have this great desire to let them know I appreciate the work they do.

As my stays in the hospital get closer to an end (I have 3 short visits left of one week each) I have discovered that I am feeling better and stronger as I complete each visit. These feelings have just sort of sneaked up on me. In feeling better I have begun to notice my surroundings at the hospital and the extreme level of illness on the Oncology Floor. It has been eye opening and a bit frightening too. Just last week I was walking the halls to get my daily exercise when I saw some workers wheeling a patient out of his room. I couldn't help but notice him as they wheeled him by. He was young (its all relative) - in his early thirties, with a head of curly, dark hair and a nice face. It was his skin that was so frightening. He was terribly jaundiced, yellow. He was not moving at all. I thought initially that he could be deceased. I found instead that he was incredibly ill and no treatment regimen had succeeded in treating him for his cancer. This was shocking to view such illness of someone so young. It made me long for the end to his suffering. I have also begun to notice the parade of extremely thin and pale people walking by my room. I had never noticed them before. I've had to look at myself. I see a person who looks relatively healthy. I feel strong. I can still laugh. I am hopeful for my future. I am lucky.

What I am learning about cancer at this point is the levels of complications the disease can hold. I don't know the specifics of my disease other than I have ALL Leukemia. I can see that my response to the chemo therapy has been positive. For others who have more complicated cancer diagnosis, their response to various therapies varies. This is obvious in the people I see on the floor. It is difficult for me to see the suffering of some of these patients without feeling concern, sadness and a sense of helplessness. I can only imagine what they must be feeling or their friends and families.I have not figured out the solution to dealing with these feelings.

For now, I believe I have so far weathered the chemo regimen. There are however, no guarantees that the disease won't return. I believe the cure rate without any possibility of return is 66%. My prognosis could be worse All I know for sure is that I must enjoy the present: my family, friends, my art and just a great blue sky. Nothing is forever. Perhaps the big P should actually stand for THE PRESENT because that is how I strive to now live my life.

My First visit back to 1890 Bryant

Took a "field trip" of sorts last Monday, May 30th to my studio at 1890 Bryant. I hadn't been their since my November diagnosis of Leukemia and my chemo therapy treatment of seven months. It was a grand, grand time. I had to shed a few tears when I saw my studio. A few things had been rearranged by my husband Gary and friend and studio mate Paul to accommodate an artist who participated in Spring Open Studios. They quickly went to work along with my other friend and studio mate Michael, and returned everything to its natural disorder. I wanted to cry even more. My space. This was, is my space to create. Its my space to work at projects I decide are the most important at that time. I have the choice to work in silence when I choose to or take breaks, visit with Paul or take a walk and visit with other artist friends.

I managed to see many fabulous friends: Paul and Michael of course, Terry, Catherine, Eszter, Trish, DK. I had such a good time catching up, laughing and crying too. Had tea with Catherine, Trish, DK and Gary. Talked about "you name it" and it was so relaxing and enjoyable. Missed seeing my beau-tay friend Diane K. - aka the wirest - but we managed to catch up by phone which as usual was totally enjoyable. I also did a quick visit with Rocio in Jasmine's bakery. We talked briefly about life being what it is and how we have to accept what comes our way. Isn't that the truth!

I am one lucky person. I have a great space to work out of. I have fabulous studio mates, Paul and Michael. I am nearing the end of my treatment and I have a place to return to with friends welcoming me back. Life with its success and dramas await.

Life is good, really good.

Quiet time on my blog in the past 3 weeks

My time has been spent in the hospital at U.C.S.F. for the past three weeks. Despite my being overwhelmed with treatment schedules and various other medical events, I have managed to continue making jewelry to keep my hands busy and my mind creative. I miss painting and creating 3-D items for the home but I know that this is just not realistic when living in a hospital room. The jewelry does make me happy and somewhat satisfied and even more so when someone buys on my Etsy Store http://www.etsy.com/shop/estudiomartita?page=1.

This last chemo series is the final long term treatment I will be receiving where I will be staying over 3 weeks at U.C. What a relief. My final chemo series consist of 4, one week stays. After that I will be out of the hospital and taking oral meds. I'm not sure how long this lasts.

This last series has left me very, very tired. I feel very weak and know that my recovery time will take more than a few days. I'm at home now and happy to be here.Doctors at the hospital told me I would have to return in one week for my first of the one week series. It seems so soon to me but I guess I'll have to deal with it.

Did I say I'm very, very tired? I guess I did. I miss my studio and doing my artwork. Time I believe is on my side. I look forward to finishing my hospital stays. I look forward to being in the studio again.

My New Orleans friends Csaba and David have offered their vacation apartment(s) for free whenever I can come to see them. I'm hoping I can do this in the Fall. I so miss New Orleans. I love that town and manage to think about it every day. In my life there has never been a city that has effected me so strongly as New Orleans. I am in love with the city. As I've said so many times before, I hope to have a second home there. From my first visit there in 1988, I fell in love with it then and my love affair has never wavered.

I am hanging on here. The hospital staff at U.C. has been great. I am in great hands. I do however want my life back. I am remaining strong. This last series of chemo was the most difficult with the most side effects. On top of that, I caught a virus, a stomach flu, at the hospital which made my condition even weaker. It was pretty terrible. I was able to weather the chemo plus flu somehow and managed to be discharged at least a week early. I refuse to give in to the hardships I face.

So that is life as I know it on May 25th, 2011. I am in recovery mode and will recover soon.

I will be back, strong and in good health. This I know.

Spent two weeks home from the hospital and managed to thoroughly enjoy myself. Between Easter Egg Hunts, visiting with friends and family, I had myself a good time. I also managed to make some new jewelry for my Etsy site plus connected with a store, Green Zebra, at the Crocker Galleria here in San Francisco. They now have some of my jewelry on consignment. Ya-HOO!!!

Tomorrow, I go back to the hospital for my final long term chemo treatment. After this visit, I have four short term visits lasting one week each. I'm feeling the same anxiety I usually experience the day before or the day of my hospital return. I'm nervous about getting the meds. This chemo therapy is the most powerful of all (I already went through this once) and has the most side effects. I suppose I'm better prepared for it this time. Whether I develop side effects this time will remain to be seen. I am preparing myself for whatever I'm faced with.

On a happier note, my sister Diane, brother-in-law J.D. and mom Helen came up last week to visit. Hubby Gary, myself and daughter Gaby took them to The Ramp at the end of Mariposa. The restaurant is built on an old pier. It overlooks a shipyard where you can see any large ship in need of upkeep being worked on. There are also some great views of the East Bay. We had a great lunch then lounged around in the sun enjoying the views and talking and laughing. A great time!

Life as it is today, April 18, 2011

On November 29, 2010, I was diagnosed with Leukemia - ALL - acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My life from that time to today has changed 100%. The focused artist I once was is now focused on getting through each of my chemo blasts at UCSF, enduring some of the side effects and dealing with the snail pace of continuing with my treatment. I have had five varying series of chemo treatments since my initial diagnosis in November.

Last night I returned from my latest series. Side effects were minimal and it was only a week visit. I am grateful for these short visits. I now question the doctors frequently with requests to go home. Sound childish? Amazing how you revert when being kept inside for too long. I welcome my escapes / break-outs from U.C.: I can sleep in my own bed,, no 2am vitals, no 5am weigh-ins, no connection to pumps or the “ball and chain “ pole thingy you are connected to and privacy! Being home is heavenly!!

I am trying to live by the 12 Step Credo, “One Day at a Time.” Unfortunately when you’ve been poked, prodded, pumped more times than you’d like to say, it is not so easy. Bad days mixed in with good days are common. I am incredibly anxious, impatient about finishing my chemo regimen. I believe I have 4 more treatments to go. The way I feel today, the day after returning from treatment, I might as well have 40 treatments.

I am a strong woman. I will get through this. I want to have many. many years left to enjoy my children, grandchildren and my husband. I want to buy a second home in New Orleans. I want my artwork to thrive and grow. I am grateful now for what I have in my life but I want more of it. This is what propels me through these chemo treatments. Am I frightened by all of this? Of course. I’m terrified the chemo won’t work. I’m living with these fears in the hope that my determination, love of my family and friends will steer me to a healthy life. Time will tell. I remain hopeful and forever impatient to see where this takes me. Through this all, life is very good.

Back to hospital - NO! SOMArts Pop-Up Shop (today), YES!

I was supposed to return to the hospital this past Friday for a four day stay. My husband began calling for me on Friday to find out when I should check in. The charge nurse said there was no room available and that there hadn't been one available since Thursday. "Call back on Saturday." Saturday we called and we were told that there would be no rooms available until Monday. Okay. The nurse at U.C. was very apologetic, saying this hadn't happened before.

What to do?

Enjoy two more days at home. In fact I signed up for an open house / pop-up store at SOMArts. My husband Gary was going to work it for me. The big surprise was that I could be there too. I haven't done a show since November and I'm honestly excited about this. Since I haven't been able to get into the studio for painting or working with upcycled items, I'll be showing mostly jewelry - rings, necklaces and earrings. I also created some handmade greeting cards, original watercolor paintings, of calavera burlesque women dressed in various sexy attire. Very fun if I do say so myself.

Its so much easier to transfer around from one place to the next. Painting, sanding, transferring images just doesn't make for a easy use in a hospital room. Had a night out with my hubby Gary and 3 girlfriends: Maria, Roxanne and Alejandra. All artists we create paintings, sculpture and photography. A wonderful mixture of talent. Along with the fab exhibit were the dancing genius of Azteca dance troupe Danza Xitlalli and Folklorico dance troupe Compañía Mazatlán Bellas Artes de Sacramento. What a great night. It felt so good to be out again with hubby and friends. Happy to be strong enough to have a night out!

Its Jewelry Time - Enough Already - Let's get back to work

Okay, so I've been diagnosed with a major illness and have another 5 months or so of treatment. Heard this tirade over and over again. At my last hospital visit, I decided it was time to get back to doing something artistic again. Painting in a hospital room is not such an easy feat. There is just too much to clean up after yourself. I decided to go back to my roots: jewelry making, beading, whatever you want to call it. Hubby Gary went to the studio and picked up beads, wire, tools, findings and I got to work. Boy, my hands were just itching to get busy again. The first day, I shooed the nurses and doctors out of my room as soon as possible so I could get back to work. All of them seemed surprised that I had something I could create while passing the time. My thought was you need to expand your circle of friends if you don't know anyone with artistic interests. My hospital room became a one room operation. I made earrings, rings and necklaces. With my new Canon camera (Christmas present from Gar) I photographed them. Using my lap top, I edited the photos. Finally, I posted them on Etsy and waited for sales. Believe it or not, the sales actually came. I even had my first sale from France just a few days ago. I guess my research in finding the right ingredients to put together my jewelry has paid off. One thing you have a lot of time for while in the hospital, is doing research.

Honestly, I hate all this time I'm having to spend in and out of the hospital. Beyond that, I'm enjoying using the time to research and create. Life is hard but sometimes you figure out how to make it better. I'm trying to stay creative in all walks of life.

Today is the beginning of my first week at home. I'll be home for two weeks. The sun is finally shining again. The orange walls of my house are shining bright. The sky is a beautiful hue of blue. There are some white puffy clouds hanging over the hills and bay. Its beautiful out there. Life isn't perfect but it could be way worse. I'm hanging on and hoping to make things better.

Lessons from Dad

My Dad, Jacob or Jake as he was known, was a celebrity, star in his own world. Funny, kind, positive, he used these qualities as a great story teller, singer and leader at his church. He attracted friends from all walks of life. Once you met Jake, you would never forget him. He was always ready for a good conversation and always interested in who you were.

Despite his positive disposition, Dad lived his life faced with various health issues. When he was a young man, working at San Jose Hospital, he agreed to help a friend move a piano. The piano slipped and broke his back. He was constantly in pain throughout his life from this injury and often had to receive surgery to relieve the discomfort. His life in his later years involved ailments associated with aging. My Dad was basically always in and out of hospitals. It was a way of life.

As a child, I didn't feel his hospital visits were particularly unusual or even frightening. My mother always presented his hospitalization as something normal. We'd go off to the hospital to visit. Once there, Dad always seemed to be holding court: greeting doctors, nurses and other co-workers with a smile on his face. As a child all I could see was that he wasn't frightened by the medical care he was receiving and he was surrounded by friends. Not a bad environment to be in.

As he became older, his relationship with his doctors grew more into friendships with a personal touch given to the type of care he received. My Dad never lost his ability to treat the hospital as his second home. His ailments grew more serious with age but he always had a ready smile and a greeting for a friend.

My Dad lived until the age of 87. He had quite a long life. With my recent diagnosis of Leukemia, I have felt his memory so close to me. There have been times that I physically felt his presence - almost in an embrace. It seems Dad has called on me to remember his strategies of dealing with health issues: face them don't fear them, do what is possible to overcome them, ask questions when needed and make friends with your community at the hospital.

It is my turn to create my community while in the hospital. The biggest surprise has been my ability to "channel" Dad while in the hospital. I know the names of doctors, nurses and other hospital staff. I chat with everyone. I question without alienating and manage to get through various procedures without getting hysterical. I'm a good patient - just as the nurses always said about Dad.

Dad prepared me for this journey. He gave me skills to deal with the multitude of treatments I have yet to receive. He showed me how to be fearless while facing overwhelming circumstances. He taught me how to create a nurturing environment, away from home and in a sterile medical environment. Love and caring exist in many odd places and I'm happy to say that Dad helped me find it here and now.

Thank-you Dad for being such a great teacher. I had no idea there were more lessons to be learned from you even after your departure from this world.

Things are allright.

After all my tales of angst, woe is me, I have to return to the hospital, I'm back here again and it hasn't been all that bad. Its actually been quite relaxing. I've gotten two different dosages of chemo over the past few days with minimal side effects. I guess the anticipation of returning is much worse than the actual being here.

I have a nice, quiet room. I decorated it with Tibetan Prayer Flags (a gift from my daughter Gaby.) I have pictures of my kids, a Virgen de Guadalupe pillow, a heart quilt my mother made. I also displayed a plaque my son Mario made saying, "Not that you need any help BUT...GET WELL SOON!" which is adorable. My daughter's friend Maria brought me some Holy Water from her Russian Orthodox Church plus postcards of a few saints. My friend Ale brought me a print out on Saint Peregrine - Patron Saint of Cancer Patients which also includes a lovely prayer. Finally, I have images of Frida Kahlo. Her difficult life and willingness to endure endless physical and emotional pain gives me strength. She used her art to express a multitude of emotions - some of which I believe we will never fully experience in our own lifetime.

Over the weekend my sister Diane came up from L.A. She picked up my Mom in San Jose and they visited Saturday and Sunday. We watched movies here, had lunch together and just talked. It was relaxing, distracting and just enjoyable. A good weekend for a great family visit.

Friday was my husband Gary and I's 27th wedding anniversary. Who knew? We have a marriage well on its way to 30 years! Since that was my first day back at the hospital, he took time off from work and we had a long lunch together. He went to my favorite Japanese restaurant in the Sunset District - Ebisu - and brought me the most delicious shrimp tempura and fresh crab rolls. YUM!!! It was a great meal together. In the evening he came back after work and we watched the Warriors play ? It really didn't matter who they were playing. I just enjoyed the time together with Gar.

So that's my big sob story. Doesn't sound very sad does it? It isn't. I get so disappointed in myself when I wallow in all that angst and fear. Once I'm firmly planted in whatever situation I fear, it usually works out just fine. This is exactly what happened with this hospital visit. Oh I may face a few bad days ahead but I'll face them if and when they happen.

So Happy Valentines day out there. Give a hug to those you love or a quick call or email.

Tomorrow it is!

Tomorrow I am re-admitted to the hospital. Unlike my last visit which was 9 days, this visit will be anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks. I'll be given a total of 3 or 4 different chemos during that time. The doctors have told me that this particular regimen might cause more side effects that any other therapy I've received so far.

Hmmmmm.....not exactly something to look forward to. Run away and hide?? I don't think its an option!

Is it any wonder I feel a little bit like the little girl above? Sometimes you just want to pout!!!

I'm going to miss my famila (they'll be visiting), my house (so much sunshine) and my freedom. THERE!! I stomped my foot too!!

Back to the hospital.

Saw my doctor and nurse practitioner today for another set of blood tests. My test results have even improved since Friday. Had an adverse reaction to some of the chemo over the past two months and my liver was taxed and overworked. Today my liver function looks great. My nurse practitioner said it was time to return to the hospital for more chemo. I asked if I could have another week off. She brought in the "Big Guns," Dr. Kaplan who is all of about 5'. He got tough with me and said they wanted my Leukemia to remain in remission so it was important to continue the chemo treatment regimen as scheduled. Oh well, it didn't hurt to ask!

Looks like I'll be going back into UCSF on Thursday.

Just when I was so enjoying the Spring / Summer like weather in San Francisco!!

A Life in Transition

What do you do when you've been diagnosed with a life threatening disease? Well, I was diagnosed with Leukemia at the end of November 2010. My first experience was denial.The doctors were just wrong and should have been talking to someone else. I thought, "This is another person's reality and future and not mine!" That frame of mind didn't last very long. With my admittance to the hospital and the nurses and doctors talking to me about MY Leukemia diagnosis, denial was no longer an option. After wards came anger. I do anger very well. I went through all of the "why me"," I'm not ready to go", "this doesn't fit into my life" diatribes. This stage was also fairly brief. I didn't want to take my diagnosis out on my family and friends. Then came fear. Fear was very difficult: "My kids, my grandson won't do well without a mother. My husband needs me. I'm not ready to go (also fits in nicely here too). My art is not yet fully developed. I need to travel further down my artistic road. What is going to happen to my dream of buying that Double Shotgun house in New Orleans?" Finally came acceptance. Well those doctors and nurses kept coming to me with my meds, updates on my condition. I knew there was no denying it was my disease and my present reality and future.

What do you do when you've been diagnosed with a life threatening disease? Well, I see that you only have two options: one is positive and the other is negative. Let's start with the negative. The negative is where you fight the doctors on every poking and prodding, every med you take with side effects. You ooze negativity in every dealing you have with your doctors and nurses. You are a VICTIM of the disease. Well, I didn't go that route. It just didn't work for me. I chose the positive acceptance. My attitude is: "Okay, here I am. This is not fun but I am strong enough to get through this. I will endure the tests, the meds, the sleep deprived nights, a bald head. I will keep the fear and anger at bay. I want to endure this journey because I want to survive this disease. Leukemia will not take me away from my family, friends and my art. I have too much to live for and THAT is the reason I will survive this disease.

What do you do when you've been diagnosed with a life threatening disease? Well, what I've learned is you listen to your doctors and nurses when they have information to pass on to you about your disease. You ask questions. You question their methods when necessary and you take notes. You make friends with your caretakers which helps with receiving the best care possible. You become your best advocate. You also accept the good and bad days. You will experience some of each. If you have a bad day, know that all you have to do is face it, accept it was difficult and that tomorrow you can start over again. I've taken on the 12 Steppers motto of: "One Day at a Time." It works.

What do you do when you've been diagnosed with a life threatening disease and you have 5 more months of treatment? You relish the good news. I'm currently in remission. My blood cell levels (red, white and platelets) are normal now. When I first went into the hospital they were at dangerously low levels. You take one day at a time. You work on your patience level. You also enjoy the love and support of your family and friends. My family and friends have been integral in my recovery. I have been enveloped by their love and support.

I'm at home now as I write this. My house is one bright sanctuary with bright orange walls and artwork. After my initial 3 week stay at the hospital in December, I was astounded by my home. It is not fancy or expensive but it feels like a place where a family lives. There is love here.

Next week I go back into the Oncology Clinic at UCSF to have more tests. Once the tests are in, I return to the hospital for another series of chemo.

This is my life for the next five months and I accept it.

As for now, I have a new outlook on my family and friends. They are so important to me. My work can wait for a few more months and by then I will have many things to express.

I'M WORKING MY HANDS AS FAST AS I CAN....

For whatever reason, it feels like my progress has been slow in adding to items for the holidays. Now that I think about it I think this is what I always go through when I'm working towards a deadline - I can't seem to get my hands to work fast enough. Oh well...such is life in the handmade business! Your hands can only work as fast as they can. I'm happy with the work I've produced so far!

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS in SAN FRANCISCO: diversity in attendance

Attended the Dia de los Muertos procession in San Francisco. Those in attendance were every slice of San Francisco within our 49 square miles: latino families, walking with photos of loved ones who had passed on; non-latinos, also walking with photos of loved ones. Hipsters walked the streets, out for a good time or out to participate in the remembrance of loved ones. Burning Man types - The Burners were in attendance with the group Apocalypse cycling their stage coach contraption through the procession. I saw the most beautiful array of Calavera face painting I had ever seen. Artistic masterpieces were being worn by participants in the procession. Lots of Catrinas in vintage dress and lots of top hats with no preference for gender in either of the two styles. The only group I objected to were the drunken types who treated Dia de los Muertos as any other parade or holiday. Walking the streets of the Mission with drinks in hand, they acted as if Day of the Dead was Mardi Gras and another excuse to get blasted. WRONG....SO WRONG!

Some might complain that Dia de los Muertos no longer belongs strictly to the Latino community.Well, there might be some truth to this. What I saw at the procession, for the most part, were some individuals taking part in an event that they understood and respected, respected and were curious, reinterpreted to fit in with their lifestyle, were completely clueless but curious or just plain completely clueless. Other than completely clueless, I think there is room for all of this. When an individual decides to participate in an event that is so different from the life they know, I think this is a good thing. It is educating yourself about another culture. Education breeds understanding rather than ignorance.

San Francisco is not a perfect city by any means but it is a city that encourages understanding rather than ignorance.That is why I live here in a city that covers 49 square miles. We are all smushed together. Not everyone gets along. Not everyone understands each other. Despite that, there is a large enough cross section of the population where curiosity, understanding of our differences is encouraged. This was the theme I saw that was the most prevalent during the procession - a desire to understand, adopt and encourage.

It was a beautiful Dia de los Muertos event.

Woke up this morning, went to my computer to check email and found this beautiful tribute to Dia de los Muertos on Etsy. My Virgen de Calavera was also included. I feel honored to be a part of this.

Looking forward to the procession tomorrow in San Francisco's Mission in honor of Dia de los Muertos. Feeling the pull of the spirits during these days. Not a scary feeling like being haunted. Just feel a sense of them close by. Its like being given a group hug by your Dad and grandma even though they are no longer here.

Its an otherworldly feeling. No...I am not crazy. I am just feeling connected to the Dia de los Muertos.

With all my Dia de los Muertos events and open studios happening in October, it was difficult to find the time to post anything new in my Etsy Store. Well the whirlwind has eased up a bit and I finally have some computer time to post new work.

The new work is of two upcycled wooden trays. Both have images of the Aztec star crossed lovers Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. There are many interpretations of this legend but I decided to post the one listed from Mexico Online: http://www.mexonline.com/history-popo.htm.

The Legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl

On a clear day, the towering white peaks of the legendary Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes can be seen from the great metropolis of Mexico City. Rising beyond 17,000 feet in elevation, these two majestic mountains offer the viewer a breathtaking sight. Snowcapped year round, the well-known landmarks have captured people’s imaginations throughout the ages. Located just 45 miles southeast of the nation’s capital, Popo and Izta, as many affectionately call these two volcanoes, share a story that reaches back into the mists of time.

Geographically, these two glacier-iced volcanoes represent the second and third highest mountains in Mexico. The name Iztaccíhuatl in the indigenous Nahuatl language means “White Woman” and the mountain actually includes four peaks, the tallest of which reaches 17,158 feet. Many see her silhouette as resembling that of a sleeping woman, complete with head, chest, knees and feet. Iztaccíhuatl is an extinct volcano and is a popular destination for adventurous mountaineers and hikers.

Popocatépetl is the taller of the two mountains, reaching an incredible 17,802 feet in height. Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl are connected by a high mountain pass known as the Paso de Cortés. Popocatépetl is still active with the volcano having spewed smoke and ash as recently as 2001. In the Náhuatl language Popocatépetl means “Smoking Mountain” and as we shall soon see, was aptly named.

In Aztec mythology, the volcanoes were once humans who were deeply in love. This legend features two star-crossed lovers, the young brave warrior Popocatépetl and the beautiful princess Iztaccíhuatl. The father of Iztaccíhuatl, a mighty ruler, placed a demanding condition upon Popocatépetl before he could take Iztaccíhuatl as his bride. His mandate required that Popocatépetl first engage in battle against the tribe’s enemy and return victorious. Variations of the legend include the added stipulation that Popocatépetl needed to return with the vanquished enemy’s head as proof of his success.

The story continues with Popocatépetl setting off for battle with Iztaccíhuatl waiting for her beloved’s return. Treacherously, a rival of Popocatépetl’s sends a false message back to the ruler that the warrior has been slain when in fact, Popocatépetl has won the battle and is ready to return to his Iztaccíhuatl. However, the princess upon hearing the false news, falls ill and succumbs to her deep sorrow, dying of a broken heart. When Popocatépetl returns triumphant to his people only to encounter his beloved’s death, his heartbreak is inconsolable.

He carries Iztaccíhuatl's body to the mountains whereupon he has a funeral pyre built for both himself and his princess. Grief-stricken beyond measure, Popocatépetl dies next to his beloved. The Gods, touched by the lover’s plight, turn the humans into mountains, so that they may finally be together. They remain so to this day with Popocatépetl residing over his princess Iztaccíhuatl, while she lay asleep. On occasion, Popo will spew ash, reminding those watching that he is always in attendance, that he will never leave the side of his beloved Izta.

All individuals, community members, artists, families are invited to view and participate in the yearly Dia de los Muertos in San Francisco's multicultural Mission. The procession starts at 22nd St. and Bryant and the Festival of Altars, as usual, will be at Garfield Park on November 2.

Please bring flowers, photos, mementos, food and/or drink to place on the altars in celebration of the lives of those now gone.

This is an artful community celebration honoring both death and the cycle of life. Dia de los Muertos is an annual Meso-American holiday dedicated to our ancestors and loved ones now gone. We celebrate the Day of the Dead by creating sacred space with art installations, performances and a walking procession which help us contemplate our personal
existence, mortality and celebration of life.

Wheelchair accessible.
Close to 24th street BART.
Free and open to the public.

Here it is. A wonderful first book by Eileen Granfors titled, "Some Rivers End on the Day of the Dead. It is available on Amazon for all of you looking for that special Fall going into holiday gift!

I am so enjoying the experience of seeing one of my calavera paintings on the cover of a Dia de los Muertos themed book. As this is the first book by Eileen, this is also my first experience having one of my paintings published as the cover art for a book. I'm thrilled! I feel very fortunate that Eileen and I were able to connect.

I just finished reading Some Rivers End and was completely absorbed in the tale of Marisol's life of transitions and her relationships with new and old friends. Many of us can remember the trials and tribulations of being a teen. To experience those times divided between two countries is even more painful. Some Rivers End was a great read. I highly recommend it!

Join us as the whole Museum comes alive with the spirit and tradition of Days of the Dead. Explore the exhibition VIVO: Days of the Dead 2010 in the Art Galleries and enjoy dance by Besh Beni and Chan Kahal, music by SonRisas and Ixim Tinamit, and ceremonia with Ernesto Olmos. Watch demonstrations of traditional Meso-American arts and foods, and buy local Days of the Dead merchandise for your home altar from our mercado. Make your own masks, dancing calaveras, and tin ornaments. Local food vendors will sell tasty tacos, tamales, and vegetarian Mexican food.

General Museum admission includes the Community Celebration, the VIVO: Days of the Dead exhibition, and OMCA's Art and History Galleries.
