Doing sale at Knit-One-One in Berkeley

Open Studios has closed until the Fall. Life continues and so do sales of my work!

This coming Saturday, May 1st, from 10 to 4pm, I'll be in Berkeley at a fabulous knit shop called Knit-One-One. According to Sile (pronounced Sheila) Coventry, the owner of Knit-one-on:

"knit-one-one is a thoroughly unique, modern center for crafting-know-how. We offer classes for all skill levels, outings to some of the best-kept-crafter’s-secrets in the Bay Area, and events which combine inspiration, fun, and frolic. "

So you East Bayers or those visiting Berkeley, stop on by Knit-One-One!

Thank-you, thank-you and thank-you again.

Primas / Cousins Sonya & Peggy visiting me from San Jose

Gary - the husband - who helped me so much during Open Studios - he even brought our Espresso machine and made cappuccinos for artists and guests!

-me at the end of Open Studios after 2 glasses of Champagne

A very big thank-you goes out to all who stopped by Open Studios for a chat and view. So grateful to the community of family and friends who make the trek out to 1890 Bryant. Today is Monday...the day after Open Studios.

I woke up feeling a bit confused. With no immediate task to complete at hand I actually felt a little lost - but only momentarily! I have a show in Berkeley coming up - next weekend(??) so I have a few days to recover and refill in any items I may be low on. At the moment, I think I may need to make a few more earrings. Other than that, I may be set!

Oh, I am tired from the rush of preparing and being present at Open Studios. I love communicating with all those who walk through the door. In the end, its always worth my efforts to strive towards creating the best work possible, creating a hospitable environment in my studio and welcoming all those who walk through the doors.

Again, a big thank-you to all who stopped by!

The Studio is Ready!

All my hard work, late nights involving cleaning, editing, tagging, hanging, arranging and rearranging have resulted in a studio ready for Open Studios! I am so tired but so happy to have a clean and pretty studio.

Studio prep is only the first part of Open Studios. The next challenge is getting through the next three days, staying healthy with a clear voice, making contacts, visiting with friends and hopefully making some money too.

Its a challenge putting these shows together...but then life is a challenge. So, now is not the time to rest. Adrenaline will be running on high. I can always rest next week!

Hope you enjoy the pics I took today of my studio.

New work for April & preparing for open studios

Dolores del Rio with kitty

Floribunda

Dolores del Rio with flower

I've been very, very busy in my studio. Open studios is in less than a week. My artwork is done but the busy work needs to be done NOW: tagging, pricing and lots and lots of cleaning. I'm a messy artist. I don't always put things away after using them. I have piles of leftover supplies from various projects. Oh boy! There's lots to tackle but fortunately I have time. My daughter Gaby and her boyfriend Donny are going to help me. Donny is great because at 6'2" he can get to things that a person at 5' 4 1/2" can't reach. My husband Gary and grandson Leo will be painting tempera dots outside the building that lead down the street to the front door of our building. Well, I guess you could say its a family affair!!

Photos from Cesar Chavez Festival in San Francisco

Dolores Huerta

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano and me

What a wonderful day I had at the Crucero Art Bazaar at Galeria de la Raza Studio 24, in San Francisco. Great people, great music, great speeches honoring the legacy of Cesar Chavez. One very special guest was Dolores Huerta. It was Dolores' birthday. She looks fabulous at 80 years old. Her speech was so moving and motivational. I felt so lucky to be there with other San Franciscans, witnessing this legend in her own right.

I took lots of pictures. I'm posting a few here. You can view the Cesar Chavez Festival album on Flickr!

Spring Open Studios in San Francisco

"Santa Tina" - mixed media work on canvas by Martha Rodriguez

Hi all.
Its April 1st and I thought I would totally ignore this April Fool's Day and instead focus on promoting my Spring Open Studios event. Yes, in a little more than 3 weeks, my studio building at 1890 Bryant St. San Francisco, plus many more artists in the Mission District of San Francisco, open their doors to the public. The public means YOU! Come see the work of painters, photographers, sculptors, jewelers and on and on. We are a talented group and welcome all of you to stop by to shop, peruse and mingle. Would love to see you there!

MAU - Mission Artists United - is coordinating this event. Please check out my postcard and the back also to find out just where all the other Mission artists are located. Can't wait to see you there!

Postcard created by Trish Tunney.

I'm going to have my mixed media artwork plus the Scarlet Collection of home accessories and jewelry available for purchase at Studio 318 at 1890 Bryant!

YOU ARE HENCEFORTH INVITED!

Scarlet Collection - new home accessories

FRIDA and her MONKEY

VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE TRAY

LUCHADOR SHADOW BOX

Alternative Loteria Mirror

ALTERNATIVE LOTERIA TRAY

Just decided to name my home accessory line, THE SCARLET COLLECTION. The reason for this name is the obvious: each item is painted a bright red color. Wikipedia defines the color scarlet as: "Scarlet (from the Persian سآقرلآت säqirlāt) is a bright red color with a hue that is somewhat toward the orange. It is redder than vermilion. It is a pure chroma on the color wheel one-fourth of the way between red and orange. [2] Traditionally, scarlet is the color of flame. It may also refer to the color of the blood of a living person." Oooooo, it sounds perfect for my work - very Aztec, blood spilled and sacred heart surrounded by flames. So there you have it. The Scarlet Collection is born. The photos above are examples of my Scarlett Collection!
